Canary Islands

The Canary Islands is one of the 17 Autonomous Communities that make up Spain and is made up of two provinces. These are: Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

It is an archipelago of volcanic origin made up of eight islands. In the province of Las Palmas are Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa (recognised as an inhabited island since 2018). In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

Also in the province of Las Palmas is the Chinijo Archipelago, off the north coast of Lanzarote. It is made up of the island of La Graciosa and the islets of Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. It is a protected natural area and constitutes the largest marine reserve in the European Union, with 700 km².

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the most populated city in the archipelago with almost 400,000 inhabitants and shares the capital with the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
